Fall 2012 Conference Class with Robert Schweitzer

Robert Schweitzer is a high school chemistry teacher with fifteen years of weaving experience. He was a guest instructor at WASOON 2008 weavers and spinners conference and has taught numerous classes across the province including the Toronto Weavers and Spinners Guild and Forward into the Past (‘FITP’) annual historical conference held at Wilfred Laurier University.

In the fall of 2008, several of his pieces were part of the ‘Grave Goods’ exhibition at the Woodstock museum. In the summers of 2010 and 2012, he was part of a group that performed historical craft presentations at the World Heritage Site of L’ans aux Meadows in Newfoundland. Robert is currently working on recreating a 16th century Ethiopian tablet-woven curtain that was discovered by Professor Michael Gervers of the University of Toronto in a cave church in Abba Yohanni.

Introduction to Tablet Weaving (25) All Levels
This is a hands-on practicum where participants will be taught the basics of tablet weaving. Tablet weaving is a narrow-band weaving technique that is commonly used for belts, straps and decorative edging on clothes. The technique (also known as card weaving) developed independently in a number of countries has been used for over a thousand years. Learn how to string your own bands and explore a variety of pattern techniques. Kit $12
