From My Grandmother to You…
Galyna Lusy Batewell, Instructor at Creativ Festival
Galyna Lusy Batewell started life in a small town in the south eastern part of the Ukraine, a former republic of the Soviet Union. A teacher by profession and by passion, she loves to share her knowledge with others. Lusy graduated Kiev Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages and has a Masters degree in English and Spanish. She taught both languages for 11 years in the Ukraine then went to the USA in 1993 where she worked as a teacher of Ukrainian literature, language, history and art at a private school run by the Christian Orthodox Russian church for Ukrainian- Americans in New York. She married in 1995 and moved to Ethridge, Tennessee to live on a small ranch with horses, sheep, goats and many other “little people”. In August 2012, she became a proud Citizen of the USA.

As a little girl, she spent a lot of time with her Grandmother, who taught her to knit and crochet at the age of six. Now nearly 50 years later, the crochet hook which her Grandmother gave her is still in her hands. She did not, however, learn to spin from her Grandmother and cannot explain why. Only in 2006 did Lusy learn the art of spinning which has become her new passion in life.

Galyna has 6 different spinning wheels at home, ranging from walking (great) wheel to the modern Ashford traveler spinning wheel. She spins on different spindles too, including the Russian way of spinning and creates Orenburg gossamer web yarn and is a collector of both wheels and spindles. Galyna wrote 2 articles in Spin Off Magazine and Piecework. Galyna opened an ETSY shop 3 years ago and now has more than 880 sales, all with positive feedback.
