Kate Atherley is Knitty.com’s Managing Technical Editor, and a seasoned designer and teacher of all things knitterly. Her latest book ‘Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet’ was released summer by Interweave Press, to great acclaim. Her first book, ‘Beyond Knit & Purl’ was praised as the 21st century ‘Knitting for Anarchists’, providing a thorough but beginner-friendly way to build your knitting skills and knowledge. She’s known for her attention to detail in her patterns and her classes, and she regularly teaches at stores and events across North America, including Interweave YarnFest and Vogue Knitting Live. Intro to Lace Knitting – Advanced Beginner

Atherley, Kate -Intro to laceAre you a newer knitter ready for a challenge? Are you looking to learn a new skill? Lace is the most beautiful work a knitter can produce. Start your lace knitting adventures with a triangular shawl in a traditional Shetland lace pattern. We’ll teach you the basics of lace knitting including working from charts and written instructions, while getting you started on your first shawl. We’ll also talk about how to identify; fix and prevent mistakes; and provide tips for making lace easier and more fun. Pre-requisite: Proficient with knit, purl. Bring: 4.5mm straight needles or a short circular needle

Intro to Cables – Advanced Beginner

We’ll address not only how to work cables of all sorts, but also how to read cable patterns and charts. Along the way we’ll share tips and tricks for working cable projects: how to keep track, and how to spot and fix mistakes. We’ll build your skills and get you started on your first cabled project: a fun scarf. Pre-requisite: Proficient with knit, purl. Bring: 4.5mm straights or a short circular needle.

Continental Knitting – All Levels

Want to knit faster? Ready to tackle colour work? Knitting continental style, with the yarn in your left hand rather than right is the key to speed and also helps enormously with colour work. It’s also useful for knitters who want to manage and minimize hand-strain. Kate will also demonstrate a magical technique for working ribbing and seed stitch without moving the yarn. Bring: 4.5mm needles

Intro to Sock Knitting – All Levels

Curious about sock knitting but feeling intimidated? This class equips you for your first sock-knitting adventures. We get you started working in the round and give you all the skills you need. I’ll explain the two types of sock construction (toe-up and top-down) and the different ways to work them (DPNs, Magic Loop and on two circular needles). You’ll learn how to read a sock pattern, how to understand sock sizing, and how to find great sock patterns. By the end of this class you’ll be well on your way to making your first sock! Pre-requisite: Confident with knit & purl; experience working in the round helpful but not required. Bring: 4mm DPNs.
