Margaret Wilson, Creativ Festival

Margaret Wilson, Quilting Expert Teaching at Creativ Festival.

Margaret Wilson started quilting when she moved to Leaside and enrolled in a quilting class to meet people in the new neighbourhood. She made her first full sized handmade wedding quilt six months later. She loves to make quilts – by hand or machine, traditional or modern.

She moved to Markham when she retired in 2006 and joined the Markham Guild of Village Crafts and the Markham Towne Quilters Guild. These guilds have been an inspiration to her as they provide friendship, exchange of ideas, motivation and the opportunity to learn new skills. In the last two years she has been working on decorative wall hangings, incorporating thread painting, beading, embroidery and decorative machine stitching.

Most of her teaching has been hand quilting and appliqué. She also taught her daughter-in-law to quilt and two of her grandchildren, a boy and a girl, to use the sewing machine at age 6. They have all made quilts, one of which (made by her grandson aged 7) was displayed at the Markham Fair.

Her work won five ribbons at the Markham Fair in the last two years. Her quilts were displayed at Markham’s Applefest, the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Show 2012 (USA) and one was shown in McCall’s Quilting magazine in 2012. She has a small collection of vintage hand made quilts, mostly bought on Ebay, going back to the 1800’s. She loves these old quilts! She makes quilts for her family and uses the vintage quilts on her beds. Sponsor website: www.MarkhamGuild.com
